Last Monday was one of the first sunny days we had in quite a while. The walk to school was really great, and the students were in good moods. The sun has a profoundly positive impact, which is all the more noticeable against the backdrop of the lack of sun we have been experiencing. It hasn't been as cold as it gets in Wisconsin, but it has been near freezing and very damp. The damp cold goes through you.
We debated going on the hike on Sunday, because there was a small chance of rain in the forecast. We did not want to go on another rainy hike. But in the end, we decided to go, and we did not regret the decision. Danny went along, as did most of the regular hikers. The hike was to Arnen Peak with the trailhead starting in Prevalle. We did this hike last January, when the peak was covered in snow. It is about 45 minutes to Prevalle, and we met up along the way with the hiking group from Tetova, North Macedonia. As we drove up into the mountains toward Prevalle, the clouds and fog hung low among the trees, and we wondered if there would be views from the peak.
We arrived around 9 am, and the clouds had lifted a bit. From the parking lot, we walked among the chalets and rental units up the steep road to the trailhead. The start of the trail is so beautiful with its well-maintained path through the pine forest. Add a touch of low-hanging clouds, and it is magical. As we walked through the trees and headed to the clearing that leads to the peak, the sun peeked through the clouds. The sun warmed us and lifted our spirits.
It did not take us long to get above the cloud layer. Our views of the snow-capped peaks of the Sharri Mountains were spectacular. Fortunately, it was not as cold as we expected, and there was no snow on the trail or on the peak we hiked to.
It was an amazing hike with an amazing group of people. So glad we decided to do it.
