Final Stop, Lisbon...

Wednesday, September 6 – Today we had our last train ride which left Porto to Lisbon at 2:34 pm.  We decided to have breakfast with Dorota, Jorge, and Aurelia.  At the restaurant where we ate, sign says “Food from another World”.  We think that the mean their “food is out of this world”.  Close enough, I guess.  We had a nice breakfast together and walked with Dorota until she left to her tour meeting point.  Then we walked with Jorge and Aurelia to her day care.  This took us past Dorota’s old apartment, the one I stayed with her before.  After we dropped Aurelia off and said good bye, we walked a little more with Jorge and then said good bye.

We decided to walk to the east side of Porto to see a large cemetery.  We are packed and so we don’t have much to do but walk.  After our walk, we headed back to the flat.  Dorota and Jorge’s flat is a nice three bedroom that was built in the 60’s.  Jorge told Thom that at the time these flats were built, they were luxury apartments and that most families in the building had live in maids.  The second bathroom, a small maid’s room, kitchen, and laundry area are separated from the three bedrooms and living room.  This was the maid’s area.  The family’s area would have been the living room / dining area, the larger bathroom, and the three bedrooms.  As we got back to the flat, Dorota texted me to let me know her tour got done early and she would be able see us before we left.

Dorota went with us to the market and we grab lunch to go and had more samples of port.  Then we headed to the train station for final good byes.  This was the messiest entry on to a train that we have had.  There was a tour group (either American or Canadian) getting on the same car as us.  They had huge suitcase which none of the ladies could lift.  They blocked the entry way onto the train.  Thom finally helped several and I made it on.  At one point the doors started to close, but there were still many people who had not made it on.  These people from the tour group couldn’t find places for their oversized luggage.  It was a bit of a zoo.  We finally made it to our seats and the rest of the ride was uneventful.  We got off at the main train station in Lisbon which was huge.  We found our Ibis Hotel which was a short walk away and then headed to the old city center of Lisbon.

We walked around a little and then went to the harbor.  It was much busier than when I was in Lisbon 10 years ago.  It seemed like Lisbon was better off economically and there were many eateries all over.  We had dinner by the harbor and then headed back to the hotel.

Tomorrow will be our last day and a long day of traveling back to Middleton.  Fortunately, it will not be an early morning as our flight does leave until 11:25 am.
