We have our placement, but we only know what is on our piece of paper and what they have told us when we had a quick meeting with our project manager. We will be in Kaçanik which is a municipality of approximately 34,000 inhabitants. It is not far from the mountains and the Sharr Mountain National Park. It is small like Kamenice and looks like it will be similar in many ways. We are told it is a pretty clean city with shops, restaurants, and weekly farmers market.
My placement is a Secondary Vocational School "Feriz Guri dhe Vellezerit Çaka". This is a public school with around 400 students. There are 2 English teachers and my counterpart is one of the teachers there at the school. He will also be our prime contact and his wife teaches as well at another school. We will have an apartment (condo) that belongs to my counterpart's sister. The sister now lives in Belgium and we will pay rent to them (Peace Corps provides for this and our utilities). My project manager says that it is a nice apartment, but we will see tomorrow. My counterpart has had two previous Peace Corps volunteers, but it has been a while. Our address is Rruga Emin Duraku, Kaçanik, 71000. We will actually live closer to Skopje than to Prishtina.
Thom will be working with an environmental ngo (non-profit) and we are both excited to see what comes next. Tomorrow, we go to Prishtina to meet our hosts or contacts in our city and we will have our site visit for the weekend. There will more details to follow.
