The World is in Good Hands...

The media often presents the negative aspects of young people today, however; I have always felt that when I meet young people doing good things to help their community and to advance themselves -- I know the world is in good hands.  It doesn't matter whether it is in the U.S., working with exchange students from all over the world, or here in Kosovo; there are so many young people willing to work to make things better.

Today, I participated with a group of students in Kaçanik who attended a two-day camp, planned a project, and then received money to complete their project.  These were five high school students, who then recruited additional young people as volunteers to complete the project.  These students asked for Gjethi's help to purchase and plant perennial plants in three location in Kaçanik.  The students wanted to plant trees, but it was too late to plant trees.  Last week, we were able to find the plants from Të Dadini's (one of our favorite markets).

These were really bright young people, interested in the environment.  Yesterday, we met at the House of Culture and saw several videos about the important of plants and trees on the environment.  Then there was some discussion.  The students came back today, to plant the 40 lavender plants, rhododendron, hydrangeas, hibiscus, and some plants I did not recognize.  In the spot by the House of Culture, we needed to weed first.  It was a bit of work, but the students really pitched in.  In the planter by the river, the soil was ready and the lavender was easier to plant.

After planting the flowers, we had lunch together at Titanic and I had a chance to talk with the students.  Their English was quite good and it is great to see the young women have such awesome goals for the future.  One just graduated high school and she plans to study Astro-physics.  One will be a junior next year and hopes to study architecture in the future and one hopes to go into the field of medicine.  She attends a medical high school in Ferizaj.  It was nice talking with the students.

We were also happy to have time to make it to Teuta apartment for coffee this evening.  I have been busy when she has asked before, but it was nice to get together and talk for a bit.

Another great day in Kaçanik.
