We woke up to a a sunny morning in Crystal City (Corning, New York); which is known for its glass blowing and glass production. We decided to skip the glass museum (which had done on a previous trip). Instead we walked just under a mile to the Rockwell Museum (not Norman Rockwell). The museum was for Bob and Hertha Rockwell, local business owners. They collected American art and artistic objects which they displayed in their Rockwell Department Store. Eventually, they worked with several Corning execs to found a museum and they donated their collection to the museum.
The art museum is a Smithsonian affiliate and the museum is now housed in the historic old city hall building. There are sculptures and painting from Frederic Remington, a painting by John Clymer, a painting by Andy Warhol, and paintings by Newell Wyeth to name a few. There were many artists the didn't recognize. The museum descriptions were very helpful.
One piece that enjoyed was a tower of textiles (blankets, quilts, bedspreads etc.) called Blanket Stories. These blanket objects were collected along with a story by the donator. The blankets were stacked artistically with large tags. Each tag had the name of the donor and the story of the blanket. Marie Watt is the artist and she has a web site (Marie Watt Studio) with all the stories from the blankets.

The other project that has been going on since 201 0 the Alley Art project that partners school students with artwork and artists to come up with art projects with a message. This art projects come to life throughout Corning in the alleys and on along the streets on the buildings of Corning. After we viewed artwork at the museum, we walked around to catch some of the Alley Art.
Alley Art Work
After seeing the outside art, we headed back to the car for the final leg of our journey back to Tallmadge. We made a short stop in Erie to take a quick walk along Lake Erie close to Presque Island and then we arrived around 5:45 pm back in Tallmadge.
