We spent a little over a week in Independence, Kentucky and had a great time with with my niece Megan's family. It is always fun spending time with her girls. We also had a house sit in Independence for part of the time. This wasn't the greatest house sit as the house was really messy and organized. Fortunately, we spent the days at Megan's house and walked the dogs several times a day.
On Wednesday, we left for Virginia again. While I brought a few earworms with me (like Clean Up, Clean Up and Are You Sleeping); Thom brought a head cold. We split the drive into two days as neither one of us wanted to do the whole drive in one day. We headed for a two and a half week house sit in Arlington, Virginia. We will be watching a dog, Porter, that is one and half years old.
Our first day of driving, we drove to Uniontown, Pennsylvania. As we got to the other side of Columbus, we stopped at the Three Creeks Park (part of the Columbus Metro Parks). It was a nice park and a nice trail along the Big Walnut Creek for a 40 minute walk.
Thursday morning, we drove to Fallingwater close to Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania. We actually were in Ohiopyle back in the 80s when we lived in Columbus. We camped at the state park and did white water rafting on the Youghiogheny River. Fallingwater is the summer home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Edgar Kaufmann in the 1930s. Kaufmann was the founder of Kaufmann Department Store in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Fallingwater is considered one of Wright's greatest triumphs and is a example of his philosophy of blending nature with architecture. We were not able to go inside Fallingwater as inside tours are closed for the season, but we were able to walk the grounds and look in the windows from the east terrace. The grounds are in the beautiful Laurel Highlands and even though the deciduous trees have lost the leaves, the plentiful rhododendrons, pine trees, ferns, and mosses were still a beautiful green. Fallingwater is an amazing and beautiful feat of architecture. Fallingwater is built along Bear Creek and the creek runs under the terrace of the house. We walked all the trails and got many great views of the Kaufmann summer home. In 2019, Fallingwater became an UNESCO World Heritage site.

After leaving Fallingwater, we drove through Ohiopyle and stopped at the water falls on the Youghiogheny River. We took a short walk along the river.
When then finished our drive to Arlington to meet with Jason and Kristy, before they leave tomorrow. They showed us their house and we met their neighbor, Alex. Alex has a dog that comes over for playdates. We set out on the back deck for a while and enjoyed the evening. Jason and Kristy took us to Shirlington area for dinner at an Irish Pub. They were having a tree lighting event and it looked like a really interesting area that we hope to walk to again.
Jason and Kristy are great and the house is really nice. We should enjoy our stay here.
